Mountain Bike Brake Sets

One thing any mountain bike can’t go without is a good brake set. When you’re flying downhill at top speed you need to have confidence that your brakes will be able to get you slowed down without hesitation. That is why Jenson carries a large selection of brake sets from such manufacturers as Shimano, SRAM, Tektro, and Avid, all the brands you know and trust.

How do you choose the brake set that is right for you? Well first of all you should ask yourself what kind of brake set is compatible with your bike. Does your bike use disc brakes, Linear Pull (V-brakes), or cantilever? What type of riding do you mostly do? Are you a downhiller, trail, or cross country rider? What type of conditions do you mostly ride in? Is it mostly dry or wet and muddy where you ride? Answering these types of questions will get you started on your way to selecting the right mountain bike brake set for you.

Not too long ago mountain bikes came with linear pull or cantilever brakes. These brakes worked well for the time, and they can still be found on some lower end bikes today. Many of us still have older bikes that utilize this type of brake, and that is why Jenson USA carries a large selection of linear pull and cantilever brakes to suit your needs. These days, most mountain bikes are coming with disc brakes. There are many advantages to running disc brakes compared to some of the older style brakes that mountain bikes used to come with. Disc brakes are more powerful than their predecessors. You can usually get away with a light squeeze of the lever with one or two fingers to get you slowed down. This in turn saves your hands from fatigue on long downhill sections. Disc brakes work in wider variety of conditions. Whether wet or dry, the performance of disc brakes does not greatly diminish. This makes them great for riding in areas that see a lot of rain and mud. Disc brakes are the present and future of mountain biking. Don’t expect to see some different method of braking any time soon.
