Bob Smith was an orthodontist, but more importantly, he was a ski bum too. In 1965, he developed the first sealed thermal lens and breathable vent foam goggles, so he could get a couple more runs in on days when everyone else had to retreat inside. Smith Optics was soon founded, calling Sun Valley Idaho its home. Smith’s history of product innovation has shaped where the company is today. Their first big innovation was creating an interchangeable lens for sunglasses and snow goggles, which was followed by advancements in fog-free goggle technology. Most recently they created ChromaPop which featured the most scientifically advanced polarized lens technology.
